Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five where he enjoyed playing various card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting really aggressive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a bit and relocated to New York to play some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were difficult as he played many hours and don’t win most times. He made some additional cash by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he possibly could boost his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more sleep and focus attention even more on poker.
The actual improvement in his game happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would often wager against each other. Howard was able to access a number of the foremost players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would hone his cunning thinking skills. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL texas hold’em.
Howard Lederer also helped his sibling Annie Duke master poker. She was an excellent student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the best female players the poker world has ever seen. He relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the subsequent decade. When the WPT gained popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
