Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he liked taking part in numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting really competitive in these card games as he was playing his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a bit and moved to New York to participate in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were difficult as he played many hours and lose most times. He made some extra money by being an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he could improve his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and concentrate even more on poker.

The definite advancement in his skills happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would regularly challenge each other. Howard had access into a number of the foremost minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would tweak his cunning thinking skills. He used these strategy concepts in the game of NL texas hold’em.

Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct decision. He told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker world has ever seen. He relocated to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the following 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
