Omaha Hi-Lo: Basic Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better begins just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. After all the players have in turn called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few entrants can get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must utilize precisely three cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same notion in nearly all poker games.

The lower hand is more complex, but really opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand takes the complete pot.

Although it seems complex at first, following a few hands you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of play easily enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha High-Low provides an overwhelming range of betting options and owing to the fact that you have many individuals battling for the high, along with several battling for the low hand. If you like a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
