Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he loved participating in different card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming really competitive in these card games while competing against his father. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to play some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were difficult as he played countless hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He made some extra money by becoming an runner for the poker players. He believed he might boost his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more sleep and focus even more on the game.
The definite advancement in his abilities happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would frequently wager against one another. Howard had access into several of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his logical thinking skills. He applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL Texas Holdem.
Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was an excellent student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP competition. She is one of the strongest female players the poker arena today. Howard relocated to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the following 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
