Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha hi lo begins just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of betting follows where players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. Another round of betting ensues. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where some players often get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same concept in just about all poker games.
The low hand is more complex, but really free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem complicated initially, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the basic subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha Hi-Lo provides an amazing collection of betting options and seeing that you have numerous individuals trying for the high hand, and several trying for the low hand.
